Pray is THE most important thing we do as we move forward as a church.

If you would like to be part of future events, please contact me by emailing me here, checking out our Events page, or by connecting on our new church Facebook page.

Prayer Requests for June 25, 2010:
  1. Outreach Events. Join us for the Community Funfest at Glenburn Green apartments on June 26. This is community carnival, and is a great way to get involved with our new church and begin making an impact on the Huber Heights Community. June 27 at 5pm, we will be doing a prayer walk through the Huber Heights neighborhoods. July 10 we will be doing a car wash. If you would like to volunteer or donate toward these outreaches, please contact me.
  2. Truck and Trailer. Please be praying that God provides a dependable, inexpensive (preferably free) pickup truck and trailer for use in outreach and moving of the church supplies.
  3. Continue to pray that God would bring people who are interested in helping into contact with us. We continue to need dependable people with a commitment to serve the hurting and reach the lost.
  4. Our first monthly service in September. Please be praying that we find a facility that is economical, centrally located, good parking, and enough room to handle our meeting. Ideally we need space for welcoming our guests, a worship area, and a couple of rooms for children. Please also be praying for people to attend. I am praying that God would give us an attendance of 30 people for our first monthly service. Please also pray that God supplies the money for the rental and the equipment we need.
Please be praying as we move forward. Interested in more information? Email me here

Church Plant Name and Website

Most people already know, but I thought it was time to make an official announcement.

The new church in Huber Heights will be named Crossroads Vineyard Church. You can check out our very basic website by clicking here. We will be working to improve the website over the next few months.

Our logo was designed by Sara Schultz. She does some great freelance work. If you need some freelance work done, I definitely recommend you check out her site here.

Focusing on the Top Three

In the technological world there is a danger of  "feature creep." Feature Creep is when a program or device adds features, mostly useful features, until it becomes too big to maintain or unusable because of all the features. The designers are trying to do to much, and pretty soon all the features begin to suffer. Why? Because they can't do everything well.

Churches also face this problem.

Thousands of churches could and should cut what they do by half so they could do something, one thing well. They have Sunday School, VBS, Children's Church, a full worship band, that new specialty curriculum from the latest celebri-teacher. They focus on all kinds of stuff and end up doing nothing well because they are trying to do everything. One church a friend of mine attend (until this happened), opted to purchase full-color program shells rather than pay their electric bill. That is feature creep.

Feature Creep comes from a good place most of the time. Churches want to reach lost people, when people attend they want certain things when they show up, the church adds more and more stuff because someone wants it, and eventually the church adds and add and adds until it is doing so much that it can't do anything well. They forget that by adding something they are taking away from something else...time, creativity, volunteers and money are not limitless. Choices have to be made.

As a church plant, it is important to focus on the main things. In thinking about the first year or two of the church plant, we have to get three main things absolutely right:
  1. Our Sunday Morning Event. It is important that we get this right because this is the main thing people experience about our church when they visit. They don't expect extravagant, but they do expect quality.  We need quality, safe childcare and great teachers to help children grow in their understanding of the Bible. We need great music that connects. We need a biblically-sound message that makes connections to real life. And, of course, we need great coffee! :)
  2. Outreach and Evangelism. This will remain a top three priority forever. We will reach out to the people of our community with compassionate acts of kindness, and serve the poor and the broken. We do this because we love our neighbor, and by meeting physical needs and doing acts of compassion we help people understand who Jesus is and how He can transform their life.
  3. Building Leaders. A Church is only as strong as its leadership. As the pastor, I have to be growing in order to lead people. For the church to grow in its Kingdom impact, we have to grow strong, healthy leaders. This means taking risks on young "unproven" leaders. This means allowing people to make mistakes.

Social Justice and My Generation

I love this quote from Skye Jethani
This sudden popularity of global justice has caught some older evangelicals off guard. They are concerned that the under-40 crowd is abandoning conservative theology in favor of a social gospel often associated with Mainline and liberal denominations. What they fail to realize is that my generation is not rejecting orthodoxy. We are rejecting the false dichotomy that the American church has perpetuated for the last century. We refuse to believe that the gospel is either social or spiritual, eternal or temporal. Earlier generations of evangelicals were more interested in saving souls than seeking justice because a cup of cold water would be little comfort in the flames of hell. But my generation cannot shake the global perspective imprinted on our minds from our childhoods. The gospel, we believe, must have relevance for this world and not simply the next.
I chafe when I hear people try to separate the Gospel of God's Kingdom from a responsibility to bring about change here in this world. One mention of Social Justice can rain down such derogatory accusations of being "Liberal!" or "Social Gospel!" Being concerned about social issues is a biblical mandate. We are called to care for the poor, the fatherless, and the widow. Our concern is not limited to these three; these are just examples from the culture of the biblical writers and represent our need to care for those who are hurting and broken.
